Police found a giant tunnel under a prison that almost helped two hundred inmates escape. Brazilian police spent three months investigating the land around the Porto Alegre Jail. They eventually found a 164 foot long tunnel that reportedly led into a local home. Police estimate the tunnel cost more than $33,000 to construct. It was well lit and had fans installed. It may have been built to help inmates escape during carnivale. Brazil's jails have been struggling to control overcrowding. In January 2017, rival gangs started a fight at another jail. Prisoners threw decapitated bodies over the perimeter. It was one of the deadliest prison riots in Brazil's history. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported in connection to the new tunnel.
